🔴 CODE RED — Proof of Citizenship
Required for Some Registrants
Georgia checks citizenship against state Department of Driver Services records when you register. If your info doesn't match, you must provide documentary proof (birth certificate, passport, or naturalization papers) before your registration is approved. A federal judge upheld this verification process in April 2024, and it has been in effect since. A 2024 audit found 20 noncitizens among Georgia's 8.2 million registered voters.
An estimated 21 million U.S. citizens don't have ready access to a passport or birth certificate.
⚠ Vigilantes Present
Any registered voter in the county can challenge an unlimited number of other voters' registrations — no evidence required. This is the mechanism SB 202 (2021) expanded. In 2022, activists challenged nearly 100,000 Georgia voters at once.

Strict Photo ID
Government-issued photo ID — driver's license, state ID, passport, military ID, tribal ID, or a free voter ID card.
⚠ No ID at the polls means a provisional ballot. You have 3 days to return with ID or it doesn't count.
A provisional ballot is a poor safety net — millions are thrown out every election. Black, Hispanic, and Asian American voters were 3x more likely to get one.

About This Tool
What is this?
A state-by-state dashboard tracking two things: who's allowed to challenge your voter registration, and how hard your state makes it to actually cast a ballot by mail or drop box. Every rating is built from real statutes and cited research — not guesswork.
Why call it Klan tactics?
Because the throughline is real and documented. The personal voter challenge — a private citizen accusing a stranger of being ineligible, with little or no evidence — is the same mechanism the Klan and Eugene Talmadge used to purge Black voters in Georgia in 1946, one week before four people were murdered near Moore's Ford Bridge for trying to vote. Many states never fully closed that door. This tool tracks which ones still have it open.
